Mailing List Help

Peter Adams, the STEPPS webmaster, also maintains the STEPPS mailing list. Write to him at either adamsp@cs.umb.edu or webmaster@makingpages.org if you have a problem or a suggestion regarding the mailing list or the web site.

I wanted to let people know a few things about the STEPPS email list.

First, we're up to 67 subscribers, which is great! But we can do better. If you know anyone who is interested in the STEPPS cause of stopping tax exempt private property sprawl, please ask them to join. You can either refer them to me or point them to the STEPPS web site (http://www.makingpages.org/STEPPS) and ask them to click "Join Us!" and then follow the link under "STEPPS mailing List."

Second, with our growing membership and with the meetings and the ideas coming fast and furious, some of you may be getting overwhelmed by the volume of email you are receiving from STEPPS. There are three ways around this:

• You can switch to "digest" mode and receive all the day's mail in one easy-to-read message the next morning. To do this, go to this web page: http://www.makingpages.org/mailman/listinfo/stepps_makingpages.org and, at the very bottom, enter your email address and click "Unsubscribe or edit options." Halfway down the next page, for "Set Digest Mode," click "On" and click "Submit my changes" at the bottom of the page.
  
  
• You can unsubscribe from the list and just check the web site for updates. I will try to keep the web site updated, but it will always lag behind the email, and many ideas and comments will never make it, so don't unsubscribe if you want the latest news. To unsubscribe from the list and stop receiving mail from STEPPS, send the command "unsubscribe" (without the quotes) to STEPPS-request@makingpages.org or follow the instructions above and follow the instructions under "Unsubscribing from STEPPS."
  
  
• Finally, I could switch the list from a "discussion" type list to an "announcement" type list. Right now, when you reply to a STEPPS message, your reply goes to the list, keeping everyone in the loop. If I switched it, your reply would go only to the person who wrote the message. This would help keep traffic down, but would make it harder to hold discussions on the list. I would prefer not to do this, but if most people prefer it that way, I would make the change.

Regardless of how the list works and how you choose to receive your messages, everyone can help by replying to the list only when you have something to add. If all you're saying is "me too" or "count me in," odds are that everyone doesn't need to see it. Just do a "Reply to Sender" (if your mail program has that option) or cut and paste the sender's address into the "To" field of your email message and send your reply privately.
